The quick answer

For a first trip, build days around Westminster and the river, the City/Tower area, West End and central museums, plus one neighbourhood-led day. London’s integrated transport network makes it possible to stay in one base while exploring widely.

Choose your area

Central London is not one neighbourhood. Choose based on your daily priorities. Westminster suits landmark-heavy trips. Covent Garden/West End is useful for theatre, restaurants and central sightseeing. South Bank works for river access and cultural attractions. City/Tower is useful for historic sights and river walks.

Use the Tube strategically

Visit London’s current guide describes an Underground network of 11 lines across nine zones, with central London in Zone 1. It also notes that fares depend on distance, time and payment method, with Oyster or contactless commonly used for Tube travel. Check the official guidance for your exact journey and payment setup.

For planning, avoid crossing the city repeatedly. Put nearby attractions on the same day and use the Tube for the larger jumps.

Build your first itinerary

  1. Landmarks: pair Westminster-area sights with a Thames walk rather than treating each landmark as a separate trip.
  2. History: combine the Tower area with nearby riverside routes and markets.
  3. Culture: choose one major museum or gallery block, then leave time for the neighbourhood around it.
  4. Evening: reserve theatre or a show on a night when you are already central.

Autumn 2026 update

Visit London’s current autumn guide, updated 2 October 2026, highlights seasonal walks, theatre, exhibitions and events. Its October guide lists Black History Month, Halloween, the BFI London Film Festival, Frieze London and the London Literature Festival among the month’s programme. Exact event dates and ticket availability should be checked on the official guide.

What to reserve early

Reserve the experiences with limited capacity or fixed performance times first. Leave flexible blocks for parks, markets, neighbourhood walks and free museums. If you want a popular West End show, put it into the itinerary before filling every evening with other plans.
