The quick answer

For a first visit, plan around one major museum or landmark block per half-day, then use the rest of the day for a neighbourhood, café, market or river walk. Paris’s public transport network includes metro, RER, buses and trams, making cross-city combinations practical.

Choose your Paris area

Do not pick a hotel only from a citywide map. Decide what you want nearby. The Marais suits travellers who want central walking and a mix of history, shopping and food. Saint-Germain-des-Prés works for classic central Paris. Montmartre gives a different hilltop atmosphere, while areas around major stations can be useful for rail connections.

Build the sightseeing list

Start with the places you would regret missing, then add smaller interests. A strong first trip might combine the Eiffel Tower area, the Louvre or another major museum, Notre-Dame and Île de la Cité, the Seine, Montmartre and one evening focused on food or performance.

Do not treat every famous attraction as a separate full-day commitment. The better approach is to group nearby sights and check opening days, timed-entry rules and current exhibitions before fixing your schedule.

Getting around Paris

The official Paris tourist office says the Île-de-France network includes metro, buses, RER, trams and other options, and its September 2026 transport guidance covers the current fare structure. Use the official network information for the exact ticket or pass that fits your dates.

Tickets and timed entry

Book the experiences with fixed entry times first. Then keep flexible blocks around them for neighbourhood wandering. If an official attraction changes its reservation rules, update the itinerary rather than forcing the old schedule to work.

October 2026 update

Paris je t’aime currently lists a busy autumn programme, including exhibitions, concerts and seasonal events. The official tourism office is also publishing October 2026 event guidance and current transport information, so use those pages when checking what is happening during your exact dates.

Start with the city, then the booking

Once your areas and must-see sights are clear, compare the hotel and experience options that fit the itinerary.
